Being a recently built facility, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) meets the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These requirements include accessible elevators, water fountains, restroom facilities, ticket counters, tables, airport directories lowered for wheelchair access, and signs with raised lettering and Braille. Accessible parking – ABIA meets ADA requirements for accessible parking with accessible parking places located in the parking garage next to the terminal and adjacent to covered airport shuttle stops in the lots. Accessible airport shuttles are available to assist passengers with a mobility impairment from remote parking to the airport terminal. Wheelchair service is available from curb to aircraft. All floors of the airport are level, facilitating mobility in wheelchairs. Escorts are available for those needing assistance getting through the airport (for example, persons with visual or mobility impairments). Escorts may be requested from airline representatives at the airport. The security screening process checks wheelchair users and other travelers with special equipment such as hand-held metal detectors. This screening is performed on the side of the security checkpoint generally used for exiting the concourse to provide enough room for wider, special equipment.
