“Hot Glass” art shimmers, shines at ABIA

AUSTIN, TEXAS – A white glass orchid flowing in a vase of clear glass stands in the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport for travelers to see. The blown glass creation by glass artist Micah Evans captures not only the beauty of the orchid but the skill and craftsmanship required to make glass a fine art form. In addition to Evans’ creation, nine other varieties of glass art demonstrate modern expressions in design. The diversity ranges from the sublimely simple to the extremely complicated and intricate. The unique glass works by local artists make up the newest airport exhibit “Hot Glass in a Cool City.”

Artist Morgan Graff’s blown glass bowls and vases feature simplicity of design with graceful shapes and controlled sense of color and line. The opposite can be found in Rebecca Cole’s reactionary color glass process that freezes the intensity of hot liquid glass to create a bold statement of radiant color. Flo Vazquez’s fused glass bowls and platters are created to play upon the theme of flowing water and shimmering river stones. Glenda Kronke’s Deep Red Sea Anemone is an organic shape created from kiln-worked glass with an open web-like structure that allows light to shine through producing a pattern of amazing shadows. Kevin Ivey’s blown glass enters the world of the abstract with his piece titled Rebirth. Steve Dubov has fun with recycled windshield glass. His sculptural piece Timesfold / Escape 1 resembles plates of cracked and frozen ice. Other displays in the exhibit include Kim Brill’s graphic designs in fused glass, Jim Penak’s intricate glass mosaics and Joshua Green’s handmade vortex and honeycomb marbles.

The exhibit is on display through April 20, 2010 in the concourse glass pylons located between gates 7 – 11, in the area of the airport past security checkpoints accessible to ticketed passengers only.
