Biography

Laura Morrison was elected to serve as an Austin City Council Member in June of 2008. Although she works on all issues, her primary focus has been sustaining neighborhood character, protecting the environment, promoting affordable housing, supporting local businesses, and improving public health and social services. When working on an issue Laura always integrates transparency, collaboration and community involvement.

As a Council Member Laura serves on several Council subcommittees:

  • Emerging Technology and Telecommunications Committee, Chair
  • Audit and Finance Committee
  • Comprehensive Planning and Transportation Committee
  • Public Health and Human Services Committee

In addition, she represents the City on the Community Action Network Board of Directors and the City of Austin/AISD/County Joint Subcommittee.

Prior to taking office, Laura was engaged in many civic arenas. She served as President of the Austin Neighborhoods Council (ANC) which provided an opportunity to get to know Austinites all across the city and to become familiar with a broad range of issues. Under her leadership, ANC neighborhood membership doubled to include over 80 neighborhood associations across the city. Laura also served with several organizations dealing with areas of particular interest to her, including affordable housing and health and human service concerns. To name a few - Community Action Network Community Council, HousingWorks Policy Committee and the Pandemic Flu Taskforce.

Laura’s professional career has included working as an engineer for Lockheed Martin, as a consultant in export compliance, and in the field of pandemic flu preparedness. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Community Preparedness and Disaster Management from the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; a Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of California, San Diego; and a Bachelor’s in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley.

Laura moved to Austin in 1981 with her husband, Phil Morrison, who is a Professor on the physics faculty at the University of Texas. Laura and Phil have two sons: Will, who lives in San Francisco with his wife Minjia, and Benny, who lives in Portland with his wife Dayna and their daughter, Edalyn Louise, otherwise known as “Eddy”.

To relax, Laura tap dances with friends every Sunday, and enjoys the great jewels of Austin by regularly rowing on Lady Bird Lake and swimming at Barton Springs.
