City of Austin Wi-Fi Mesh Network

The City of Austin offers connectivity to its wireless mesh network for general public internet use.

In March 2006, the City in partnership with the World Congress on Information Technology and Cisco Systems launched this project to provide high-speed, outdoor Internet wireless access to limited areas in downtown, East Austin and Zilker Park. The wireless mesh provides a wireless testing environment to improve areas of education, economic development, City services and outdoor access to the Internet.

Getting Connected to the Outdoor Wireless Mesh

  • Check to make sure that you are within the mesh coverage zone (link to map)
  • Your computer must have a wireless card that is 802.11a, or 802.11b or 802.11g
  • Use your computer’s wireless software and connect to the “COA_MESH” network
  • When you open your browser you will be automatically redirected to a COA MESH splash page.
  • Read the conditions outlined on the splash page and click the accept button and start surfing.
