Austin Public Library Awarded a Texas Responds Grant Funding Library Services and Programs to Support Victims of Hurricane Katrina
The Austin Public Library has been awarded a $44,000 Texas Responds Grant through the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The Texas Responds Grant funds library services and programs to support victims of Hurricane Katrina who have been evacuated to Texas. The Library has used the grant to purchase books, periodicals, youth programs, and an oral history and photographic exhibit. Many of the evacuees are children who need early literacy activities and after-school programs to provide opportunities for them to adjust to their new community and move past the trauma of the hurricane. The Library’s Youth Services Division is providing multiple program opportunities to fill this need. In celebration of our Texas newcomers, the library will host a Mardi Gras, Austin Style celebration for families to come together and enjoy music, storytelling, juggling, puppetry, arts and crafts, and other fun activities at the Carver Branch Library and the George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural center, 1161 Angelina on Sunday, February 26, 2006 from 2:00 p.m. to 5 :00 p.m. One of the Library’s featured performers for the day is Big Chief Kevin Goodman of the Flaming Arrows Mardi Gras Indians and the Ceasar Brothers Funk Band, the Neville Brothers nephews. Food provided by Jazz, A Louisiana Kitchen, Nubian Queen Lo-La’s and Texas Picnic Company and Bakery, and Central Market. Costumes and all ages are welcome.
