City offices close for Veterans Day; garbage pickup to remain on schedule

City of Austin administrative offices and other municipal facilities will close Friday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. Normal business hours will resume Monday, Nov. 14.

Closures include City Council offices, City Hall and the Austin Public Library.

Garbage, recycling and yard trimmings collection for Austin Resource Recovery (formerly Solid Waste Services) customers will remain on regular schedules.

All of the recreation, cultural and senior centers, as well as the Dougherty Arts Center, will also be closed. However, after-school programs will still meet.

Zilker Garden Center, Austin Nature and Science Center and Beverly Sheffield Education Center will remain open on Veterans Day as well as golf and tennis operations.

The Business Solutions Center, 505 Barton Springs Road, will be open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This center provides free information and technology resources to business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs.

The Town Lake Animal Center, 1156 W Cesar Chavez St., will be closed Thursday, Nov. 10, and Friday, Nov. 11, so that the Animal Services Office can relocate animals and shelter operations to the new Austin Animal Center at 7201 Levander Loop. Pre-arranged pick up of animals will be accommodated during the closure. The new Austin Animal Center will open for business at 11 a.m. Nov. 12.

The Veterans Day Parade will take place along Congress Avenue beginning at 9 a.m. Nov. 11. Road closures will be in effect along the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge from Riverside Drive to Cesar Chavez Street between 6:30 to 11 a.m.

The parade route will begin at Congress Avenue and Barton Springs Road and head north to 11th Street along Congress Avenue. Roads will be closed along the route for the duration of the parade, as well as all intersecting streets between Colorado and Brazos streets.

Alternate routes are recommended. North/south options are Lamar Boulevard and Lavaca and Red River streets. East/west alternatives are 15th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. For more detailed information on street closures and a map of the parade route, visit Special Events website.
