People’s Gallery 2011 Art Exhibition ends January 12

Austin, TX – Each year the City of Austin’s Cultural Arts Division of the Economic Growth and Redevelopment Services Office invites Austin-area artists, galleries, museums and arts organizations to participate in an exhibition to showcase some of the finest examples of Austin’s visual art talent. The selected work then graces the public spaces of Austin’s City Hall, designed by renowned architect, Antoine Predock, and is free and open to the public from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

The current 2011 People’s Gallery exhibition is the 7th since City Hall opened and includes 169 works by 151 artists in a wide variety of media. The first floor atrium display includes a large pieced fiber work by Mary Ann Vaca-Lambert (“Passion Flower”) and an interactive site-specific metal and mirror installation by Barna Kantor (“Compound Eye”) which raises issues of perception in public places. The second floor has the largest number of works (73) including a sculptural chess set with insects as the characters (entitled “Chess Bugs”) by Laura Sturtz, a hand-stitched portrait of Gandhi by Barbara Lugge and a wall of cast plaster “Carnival Balloons” by Jennifer Chenoweth. The third floor display includes a wall work composed of living plants by Monique Capanelli and a sculptural installation of vultures devouring outmoded technology by Shawn Smith. Visitors may pick up a tour guide on the first floor and complete a self-guided tour of the exhibition.

The public is also invited to complete a paper ballot to vote on a People’s Choice Award. These votes are used to guide what artwork will be added to the City’s permanent collection for Austin City Hall. The deadline for submitting ballots at Austin City Hall is December 30 at 6pm.
