The City of Austin designs its next Bicycle Map

The next version of Austin's bike map is under way! Along with it, a 5-county regional bike map will also be created. The Bicycle Program thanks everyone who chimed in on the preliminary survey, helping us to set priorities for the content and layout of the map.

Update: We've closed the road ratings survey for the local map. Thanks for all of the detailed and thoughtful feedback. It will make the next map that much more useful!

If you have some experience riding the greater Capital Area Region, please take a moment to do the same exercise for the regional road ratings:

Give 3 Feet Campaign

In October 2009, the Austin City Council passed what’s known as the "3-foot safe passing law." This law protects vulnerable road users – such as pedestrians and cyclists – by setting a "safe passing distance" of 3-feet for cars and small trucks, or 6 feet for heavy duty trucks and commercial vehicles. The Public Works Department is working with Austin Police to make sure the law is enforced.

Austin is a designated Bicycle Friendly Community

In May 2007, the League of American Bicyclist (founded in 1880) designated the City of Austin as a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community. The Bicycle Friendly Community program helps communities across the country learn how to become bicycle friendly and offers examples from communities large and small across the country who have successfully built bicycling into their city plans. The city of Austin was evaluated on engineering, education, enforcement and encouragement of bicycling.
