CITY OF AUSTIN'S TREE OF THE YEAR PROGRAM
Austin's Tree of the Year Award (ATYA) was created in March of 2007 to recognize outstanding trees within the city limits of Austin. This recognition of beautiful and healthy trees will provide Austinites with examples of the benefits of proper tree selection, care and placement.
ATYA has been established to identify superior trees that are most valuable and unique to this area. Two tree types will be chosen annually: large and small. Large trees will include those that generate or have the potential to provide significant overstory canopy coverage (e.g. Live Oak, Cedar Elm). Small trees will include those that do not achieve the same size at maturity of the large trees (e.g. Texas Mountain Laurel, Yaupon Holly). These trees frequently thrive within the areas under the large trees and are commonly referred to as understory trees. By recognizing these two types of trees, ATYA intends to promote and raise awareness of Austin's urban forest.
