"The Central East Austin Weed and Seed Initiative helps neighborhoods help themselves by enabling them to reduce crime, strengthen community capacity, increase quality of life, and promote long-term community health and resilience." W&S Certificate PDF 532 KB About Central East Weed & SeedWeed & Seed is a community-based strategy sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). It is an innovative, comprehensive multi-agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and community revitalization. Currently, there are more than 250 Weed and Seed sites nationwide. The Central East Austin Weed & Seed was officially recognized in 2005 by the US Department of Justice. The site – now in its’ third year - is eligible to receive funding for up to five years to administer the Weed & Seed strategy, which is a two-pronged approach:
This strategy is based on collaboration, coordination, community participation, and leveraging resources and is designed to help build the momentum needed for the residents of a community to establish themselves and to steer their community in the direction that they want. There is grant money available, but this funding is not indefinite and it is a modest amount. The grant money is not designed to replace funding but rather to help create partnerships and move the community toward a self sustaining program. It’s Steering Committee and its four subcommittees—Public Safety, Neighborhood Restoration, Reentry, Prevention, Intervention, and Treatment and Youth & Family — give the support and guidance necessary to determine how Weed & Seed can best support the community. Central East Austin Weed & Seed boundaries are defined by Interstate 35 and Chicon on the West; Northwestern, Chestnut, and Miriam Avenue on the East, and East 11th and 12th on the South. The Northern boundaries are East 12th and Martin Luther King Blvd. The area is located in the 78702 zip code.
